How to Identify Fleas

Fleas are tiny, fast, and hard to see. They are about the size of a pinhead, and they are usually brown or reddish-brown. They have flat bodies and long legs that are designed for jumping, and they can jump up to 150 times their own height. Fleas can bite people, but they prefer to feed on animals, especially dogs and cats. If you have pets, they may be scratching or biting themselves if they have fleas. You may also notice tiny black specks on your pet's skin or in their bedding, which could be flea droppings.

Fleas are ectoparasites, which means that they live on the outside of their hosts' bodies. They are wingless, but they have long legs that are designed for jumping. They can jump up to 150 times their own height, which is why they can move so quickly. Fleas are also very hard to kill, because their bodies are covered in a hard, waxy substance that protects them from water and other substances. This is why it is so important to call a professional for The Woodlands flea control.

How Do You Get Fleas?

Fleas are small enough to get into your home through tiny cracks and crevices. You or your pets can bring fleas into your home on your shoes or clothing, or they can jump onto your pets when they are outside. Once they are inside, they can lay their eggs in your carpet, bedding, or upholstery. Flea eggs are very small and hard to see, but they can hatch in as little as two days. Flea larvae are also very small and hard to see, but they are covered in tiny hairs that help them move around.

Flea larvae feed on organic matter, such as dead skin cells and pet dander. They can also feed on flea droppings, which are made up of digested blood. After they have molted a few times, flea larvae spin cocoons and turn into pupae. Flea pupae are very hardy, and they can survive for several months without feeding. When a flea pupa detects the vibrations of a potential host, it will hatch and jump onto that host.

Tick Identification in The Woodlands

The Woodlands' beautiful parks and trails offer a chance to connect with nature, but they also come with a potential hitchhiker: ticks. These tiny arachnids feed on the blood of animals and humans and can transmit diseases if not identified and removed promptly. Here's what you need to know about tick identification in The Woodlands:

Common Tick Species in The Woodlands:

  • Lone Star Tick: Easily recognizable by the single white marking on the female's back.
  • Blacklegged Tick (Deer Tick): Females have a black body with a red-brown "shield" on their backs. Males are mostly black. Be aware, this tick can transmit Lyme disease.
  • American Dog Tick: Brown body with reddish markings, commonly found on dogs but can also bite humans.

Identifying Ticks:

  • Size: Ticks can be very small, the size of a sesame seed in their nymph stage, to larger than a pea when fully engorged.
  • Body: They have a flat, oval-shaped body and eight legs (unlike spiders which have six).
  • Head: Look for a small head with mouthparts designed for latching onto a host.

Early detection and removal are crucial! If you find a tick on yourself or your pet, carefully remove it with tweezers and monitor the bite site for signs of infection. For accurate identification and to discuss potential disease risks, consult a healthcare professional.

"We have been faithful customer's for many years in 2 different homes in The Woodlands.  The guys were always professional and left service cards at the door.  When we moved to the last home in 2014, we had a major cutter ant issue!!  They appeared out of nowhere and were destroying everything in sight!  I called the office in a panic and the gal got someone out the very next day.  He not only took care of all the beds, he followed the ant trail all the way to the back of the preserve and knocked those suckers out! We now live in Denver, Colorado. I was so pleased to find a locally owned Preventative Pest control - they are awesome too. When we move back to TW, I'll just pick right back up with you guys!"

    Elisabeth S.
