Common Pests that Pop Up During Spring Time

April showers bring May flowers.. and spring pests! Spring is a beautiful season where the weather starts to warm up, accompanied by spring showers, which both bring on a slew of pests that you should prepare for! The changing weather acts as an open invitation for spring pests to make their way into our homes.

So what pests should you look out for?

Mosquitos

Southerners are no strangers to mosquitos, but the Winter brings a few mosquito-free months of relief. Mosquitos won’t be a full-fledged nuisance until the Summer months, but they start to pop up early in the Spring. Mosquitos thrive in warm and humid environments!

It’s never too early to start preparing for mosquitos because they can carry potentially dangerous diseases. There are a few things that can be done to reduce the number of mosquitos in your area, so start planning for that early.

Ants

As the weather begins to warm up, ants become more active. In the Spring months, ants will begin to pop up everywhere – inside, outside, in your garbage, everywhere! Ants will pop up anywhere that there is even the slightest chance of there being a food source. The best way to prevent ant infestations is to make sure that all doors and windows are properly sealed – but sometimes they find their way in regardless. Keep your eyes peeled for stray ants, because that might be a good indicator that you are experiencing an ant infestation.

Fleas & Ticks

While fleas and ticks are both active year-round, they are particularly active during the Spring months. Fleas and ticks take full advantage of the fact that the weather is warmer and humans and pets alike are both outdoors more often in the Spring than they are in the Winter. Flea and tick prevention is very important in these months because fleas and ticks can cause a nightmare situation for pet owners. Once you have them, it is very hard to get rid of them!

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are seen year-round in the South but often seen in the Spring. Roaches are known to hide in cool, dark places, and spring cleaning often draws them out of their hiding spots. During spring cleaning, attics, and crawl spaces are cleared out, and cockroaches are forced out into the open.

If you notice a number of cockroaches during your spring cleaning session, you might want to call a professional. You never know where the rest of the family might be hiding!
